On 29 March 2025, Organic Farming Italy organised an olive oil seminar with Dieter Oberg as speaker at the Palm House of Nymphenburg Palace from 9am to 5pm.
Mr Oberg has been head of the Informationsgemeinschaft Olivenoel for 35 years. He also founded and led the German Olive Oil Panel (DOP) for 17 years, which developed the current valid sensory testing standards in Europe. He advises the European Union, Stiftung Warentest, many institutes and olive oil producers across Europe. He is also a juror on numerous recognised olive oil tasting panels such as the "GOOL – Global Olive Oil Award". If you will, he is the most knowledgeable person in Germany when it comes to olive oil.
Since I had long wanted to attend such an event, I booked a place.
It was an absolutely magnificent experience. Every participant received a high-quality nameplate and there was a small breakfast to start: pretzels, chocolate-filled croissants, smoothie shots, nuts, orange juice and coffee.
Alongside a little theory in the morning, we were already able to taste a few of the "good" ones from a total of 19 olive oil samples. That was my first aha moment, as I recognised their aroma and taste from supermarket/discount olive oils.
Next came samples of defective and a refined olive oil, to experience the other side of the coin. How badly such oils smell is hard to describe. They reminded me of cleaning products and chocolate with rum.
For lunch there was a lavish buffet with delicious salmon, chicken, potatoes, rice, etc. For dessert there were chocolate-covered profiteroles, pudding and sheet cake. I have no photos of the dessert... sorry. It was simply too delicious.
In the afternoon we started the second tasting round. This time exclusively with good oils. We were introduced to the criterion and evaluation scheme of "harmony".
All the samples represented everything an olive oil lover could wish for: from the varieties Coratina, Hojiblanca, Picual to Taggiasca. From lightly to intensely fruity to strongly peppery.
The last sample was, for me – someone who has already tasted very many oils – a revelation: again from the Hojiblanca variety. I had previously been able to try two olive oils from this variety privately (early and late harvest). Both were good but not to my taste. The sample that Mr Oberg had selected for us was completely different. A very fine, mild aroma. Like a freshly picked apple in a flower meadow. I felt transported back to my first tasting in Corfu in 2019.
The final insight for me was therefore: olive oil can always surprise you. Even when you thought that olive variety "X" harvested early has a definitive aroma, you are suddenly taught otherwise.
Finally, each participant was presented with a package containing a bottle of olive oil and an extremely stylish certificate. Many thanks to the organisers for all your effort and to Mr Oberg for this informative seminar.

That was a truly worthwhile Saturday. A perfectly organised, lovingly and attentively hosted seminar in a pleasant setting with perfect all-round catering. And particularly noteworthy: characterised by great expertise and didactically committed knowledge sharing by Mr Oberg. Solid knowledge was presented in an entertaining and very instructive way, motivating us to evaluate various olive oils and ultimately analyse them independently.
Many thanks also for the presentation materials!
I will recommend you to all our friends who love Italy and especially olive oil.

    Ciao Kai and organic team,
Unfortunately, I couldn't attend the seminar myself due to illness. But my two boys were there live. They were very enthusiastic about the event and of course about Mr Oberg's extensive knowledge. Great conversations, lots of knowledge exchange and a pleasant venue.
    Best regards
